Sawmill Trail Runs is a December trail race held at Staunton State Park in Pine, Colorado, located approximately 40 miles southwest of downtown Denver. Participants can select from 50k, 16-mile, and 8-mile distances. The event has a combined field limit of 250 runners. The 50k has a 12-hour time limit, and the shorter races have an 11-hour limit, appropriate for the winter conditions and the distances.
The race originated as a low-key Fat Ass run at White Ranch Open Space in Golden. The original 27k loop utilized almost all the park's trails and included 4,229 feet of climbing per lap. The current location features high grassy meadows around 8,100 feet and granite cliffs exceeding 10,000 feet, offering a mountain-park course close to Denver. Micro-spikes are permitted when conditions warrant, and snowshoes may be used if snow depth exceeds six inches.
