About this race
The Wiener Herbstmarathon, organized by the LCC Wien athletics club, takes place in Vienna each autumn since 2003. The event offers five race distances: a 7.03 km run, a half marathon, a three-person half marathon relay, a full marathon, and a six-person marathon relay. It is designed for runners seeking a very flat road race, featuring an AIMS-measured course with minimal elevation change. All races utilize a traffic-free loop within the Wiener Prater, providing a controlled environment.
The current 7,032.5-meter loop follows the Hauptallee and circles the Obere Heustadlwasser; the half marathon consists of three laps, and the marathon requires six. The Hauptallee, a long avenue lined with chestnut trees, presents a U-turn that may disrupt a runner's rhythm. Past events used a 10 km loop starting and ending at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, incorporating parts of the Volksprater, Rotundenallee, Rustenschacherallee, and Lusthausstraße. The course has facilitated fast times, including an Austrian half marathon record by Susanne Pumper. A six-hour time limit accommodates both steady amateur runners and club athletes aiming for personal bests.
