About this race
The BASF-Schultriathlon takes place in Hiltrup, Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, for primary and secondary school students. It is an XS-format race for children and juniors, featuring a short swim, bike leg, and run, unlike adult triathlon distances. Typically, nearly 1,000 children participate, making it one of Germany’s largest school triathlon events. Schools manage registration, and participants come from many local primary and secondary schools, not exclusively from specialist triathlon clubs.
The swim occurs at the Hiltrup outdoor pool. The bike course covers about 6 km, and the run is approximately 1.5 km. The event is part of the DTU Triathlon-Schultour and is organized by W+F Münster. Its founding principle is significant: teacher Thorsten Küster observed that school sports competitions often involved only the most athletic pupils, offering limited opportunities for less active children. The BASF-Schultriathlon was established to provide more children with a genuine race-day experience, rather than solely selecting the quickest participants.
