Baztan - Following the Basajaun's Trail is a challenging cycling race on the historic Baztan road connecting Bayonne and Pamplona. Participants can select one of two strenuous routes: Baztan Ona, covering 131 km with 1,900 meters of elevation gain, or Baztan Real, spanning 185 km with 3,250 meters of elevation gain. The event features a flexible start, allowing riders to set their own pace throughout the day instead of adhering to a single, scheduled mass start. The course crosses the Basque Country, linking the French Basque city of Bayonne to Pamplona via mountain passes, valleys, and wooded areas. The Baztan road historically served as a vital route for the Basques and was part of an ancient pilgrimage path to Compostela; the race embraces this historical context. The name references the Basajaun, a figure from Basque folklore associated with wild landscapes, which aligns with a route with secluded roads, difficult ascents, and a collective journey organized by Aviron Bayonnais.
