About this race

La Subida Internacional Granada-Pico Veleta, or La Subida al Veleta, is a mountain road race starting in Granada and heading into the Sierra Nevada of Andalusia. It is a long uphill course on asphalt towards Pico Veleta, a summit on the Iberian Peninsula. Organizers describe it as the most challenging asphalt race globally. The race's origins trace back to individuals aiming to ascend from Granada into the Sierra Nevada. One such person was Enrique Carmona of Maracena, who intended to run up and return. The event's history is linked to four marathoners who began in the summer from Granada’s Paseo del Salón, using the old road to climb towards the peninsula's second-highest peak. Over 700 athletes participate, with significant local backing and assistance from military units along the mountain route.
