The Trail des Îles is a trail race held in mid-September in Hénin-Beaumont, located in the Pas-de-Calais region of Hauts-de-France. Contrary to its name, it does not take place by the sea. Instead, the courses utilize local paths, the Parc des Îles, and the spoil heaps characteristic of the former coal-mining area.
Runners can select from 5 km, 6 km, 12 km, and 22 km distances. The shortest, the Trail découverte, is designed for novice trail runners, and a distinct 5 km Pink Trail is exclusively for women. The longer courses traverse the Parc des Îles, extend into fields near Billy-Montigny, and cross Terrils 105 in Hénin-Beaumont. These terrils, which are mounds of mining waste, are incorporated into every distance, linking the race to the region's industrial heritage. The Parc des Îles also serves as a common recreational area, with paths used for various fitness activities. After 17 editions, the event maintains its character as a community-focused, accessible trail running day, with participants of all levels converging at the Parc des Îles.
