About this race
The Cockington Christmas Caper is an 8.5-mile off-road race held at Occombe Farm in Torquay, Devon. Runners begin in the morning from the TQ3 1RN area. This multi-terrain run covers trails, footpaths, and cycle paths. Organisers note the route is very hilly and often muddy, suggesting trail shoes are recommended.
The course is notable for its steep climbs and awkward descents, with footpath steps making many sections difficult to run. The mud can be deep and sloshy, posing a challenge for trainers. One participant described it as “8 miles of mud, sweat, tears and laughter through countryside,” fitting for a Devon winter trail race. Matthew Day organises the event, which presents itself as a local off-road challenge rather than a polished road race.
