About this race
Cornwall’s Backyard Ultra begins and ends each lap in the Race HQ field near St Eval Go Karts, between St Eval and Bedruthan Steps. Runners are sent out on the hour for as long as they can continue. Each loop is 4 miles 880 feet (6.7056 kilometres) and must be finished within the hour to count. There is no set finish distance; the winner is the last runner to complete one more loop than everyone else. Every other runner is marked DNF. If no one completes an additional loop, there is no winner.
The route follows Cornish country lanes, including a section up to and along about half a mile of the Coast Path at Bedruthan Steps. It is described as undulating, testing pacing, recovery, and repetition rather than a single severe climb. Runners must be in the corral when the bell rings, with warnings at three, two, and one minutes before each start. Late starts are not permitted. The event offers onsite camping, water, snacks, and timing trackers. Required kit includes water, a phone, warm or waterproof clothing, high-vis gear, and lights for darkness or poor visibility. The first winner, Jon Blemings, completed 19 laps (79 miles), with lap times between 39 and 44 minutes.
