Trails & Tarmac Summer Backyard Ultra is an open-ended ultra held near Crickhowell in the Black Mountains. Participants run a 4.167-mile loop, starting a new loop precisely every hour, until only one male and one female runner remain capable of completing another loop. The rules are strict: all runners must be in the starting area when the bell rings; late starts are invalid, and each loop must be finished within the hour.
The course consists of half trail and half tarmac, featuring one gradual ascent, a short steep section, and mostly level ground conducive to fast early running. Runners may not use trekking poles or receive individual assistance during a loop, although shared aid is available at the headquarters. A medal is awarded to anyone reaching 32 miles, and the final male and female finishers receive trophies. This event is part of the Limitless Trails Backyard Ultra series, which also offers a winter race. The event provides hot food, drinks, medical support, showers, toilets, and daylight photography.
