Hanatrappene i Sandnes
, Norway
About this race
Hanatrappene Opp is a short uphill stair race in Hana, Sandnes, held on a Sunday in October. It takes place on a 306-step outdoor staircase that connects the old Hana school with the sports facility. This staircase is also used as a school route, meaning the race utilizes a piece of everyday local infrastructure instead of a closed road course. Sandnes Idrettslag and Hana IL are the organizers, providing individual starts and timing for each runner.
The climb is straightforward: begin at the bottom, ascend the stairs, and arrive at the top with fatigued legs. The staircase, finished in 1955, is possibly Northern Europe’s longest stairway in nature and attracts people for training outside of race day. The event is open to all participants, with prizes awarded at the finish. Hana IL operates a kiosk at the summit, and Sandnesposten provides a live broadcast. Records have been maintained since at least 1979, yet the atmosphere remains local and practical: participate, exert yourself, enjoy the event, and reach the summit.
