About this race
The 100km, 50km, and 25km entries for Emerson’s Whaka100 can sell out months ahead, indicating how seriously mountain bikers approach this Rotorua race. Held on Labour weekend, it is designed for riders seeking a long, demanding day on trails, distinct from a road endurance event. Now in its fourteenth edition, the 100km distance presents the main challenge.
The course utilizes Rotorua’s mountain-bike terrain, with the Redwoods forming the central focus of rider preparation discussions. Two-time winners Josie Wilcox and Tim Rush are back to compete again. Rush characterizes the 100km strategy as riding intelligently, conserving energy, and embracing the difficulty. Wilcox, returning after injury, continues to participate and gauges her performance by her position within the overall rankings. A majority of participants travel from outside Rotorua, contributing to a significant influx of visitors and a notable economic benefit for the local area.
