KINGS Backyard Ultra
Saturday, May 30, 2026 · Whangārei, New Zealand
About this race
Barge Showgrounds provides the setting for this last-person-standing endurance event, featuring maintained showground fields, adjacent sheep paddocks, and open countryside views, distinct from the polished nature of a road race. KINGS Backyard Ultra follows the classic backyard ultra format; while the initial loops might seem runnable, the first hour is not about outright racing. This event is for individuals exploring their limits beyond marathon distance and for ultra runners familiar with the discomfort that follows.
The loop's terrain evolves: grass fields, farm tracks, single trail, gravel road, brief tarseal sections, and creek-side running, with the highest point near the sheep paddocks. The elevation is not the sole factor; the core idea is "cumulative fatigue becoming the primary challenge," which presents "as much a mental challenge as a physical one." Between laps, the tent city, complete with music, food, and entertainment, creates a unique atmosphere blending festivity with intense pressure.
