NZ Marathon Championships 2026

The NZ Marathon Championships determine the national marathon title for New Zealand. These championships do not have a fixed location or a separate event. Athletics New Zealand incorporates the championships into an existing marathon, meaning the host city varies with each edition. Rotorua and Auckland frequently host because they are major marathons and are positioned near the beginning and end of the harrier season. The championships include senior men's and women's races, with masters marathon championships included since 1982. The course is determined by the host marathon, unlike a set championship route. This distinguishes the series from a single-city event. Occasionally, the championship is awarded to a marathon celebrating a significant anniversary, while at other times it is integrated into a large, established race like those in Rotorua or Auckland. Entry numbers can decrease when the championship is part of a mid-season marathon, making timing a significant factor. In addition to individual titles, a team competition exists where the top four men and top three women from each team contribute to the overall score.
