About this race
At Long Bay Regional Park in Auckland, the Schools Sustainability Challenge sends teams of four Year 5–8 students around the park for a two-hour outdoor navigation event. Registration opens at 9:00 am, the start is at 10:00 am, and each team moves on foot with a teacher or parent shadow while trying to visit as many checkpoints as possible.
The route is built around hands-on environmental tasks rather than straight running. Students can earn extra points by doing challenges such as identifying native bird calls, matching pests with the right traps, or weaving with flax. Prize giving follows the event, with awards for the top three teams and random spot prizes, and the wider aim is to get students working together while learning about environmental care, pest management, and Auckland’s regional parks.
