Backbone Trail Run, a trail run and walk, takes place in Backbone State Park near Dundee, Iowa. Same-day registration opens at 7:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. start. Participants can choose between two routes: The Original, a moderate 4.3-mile run, and the Lake Loop, a difficult 10K. Walking is permitted only on the 4.3-mile route, which is described as a moderate hike.
The course starts on pavement, allowing runners to establish their pace before transitioning to the trail. The trail itself presents typical challenges: rocks, roots, ruts, uneven terrain, and muddy sections, with caution noted near difficult areas. Awards are given to winners as they finish; there is no separate ceremony. The Backbone Friends Group organizes the race, with proceeds benefiting Backbone State Park projects beyond the standard budget, such as watershed protection, tree planting, playground equipment, and visitor enhancements.
