About this race
The California International Marathon starts at Folsom Dam and finishes at the State Capitol in Sacramento. The course descends from an elevation of 366 feet to 26 feet. This December road marathon in Northern California covers the standard 26.2-mile distance. Organized by the Sacramento Running Association, CIM typically sees just under 10,000 finishers, ranking it among the largest marathons in the United States.
The route traces an old gold miners' road, beginning near Folsom Dam, crossing Sacramento suburbs, and concluding downtown at the Capitol. Its net downhill profile attracts runners aiming for fast times, though the strict six-hour cutoff demands respect. CIM has been held annually since 1983. It has hosted the USA Marathon Championship on several occasions, including early national championship races for both men and women, as well as later championship events. The marathon also features a tradition of official artists, beginning with Sacramento artist Phil Dynan, whose early pieces depicted runners against a backdrop of the Sierra foothills.
