About this race

The Sawmill Gauntlet is a December trail-running series held at Staunton State Park in Pine, Colorado, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Denver. Participants can select from 50k, 16-mile, and 8-mile distances, with all races commencing and concluding at the Ranch Hand Group Picnic Area. The event takes place at elevations of 8,000 feet and above, meaning winter mountain conditions are expected. Previous years have featured dry trails, sub-zero starting temperatures, mild 60-degree weather, and significant snowfall. The 50k has a 12-hour cutoff, while the shorter races offer an 11-hour limit. The course navigates Staunton's high meadows, wooded paths, and granite-cliff landscapes, with park elevations reaching over 10,000 feet. Micro-spikes are permitted, snowshoes may be used when snow depth exceeds six inches, and a single 50k loop might be altered if snow or trail conditions become challenging. The event originated as an informal Fat Ass run at White Ranch Open Space in Golden, subsequently transitioning to an official trail race before relocating to Staunton State Park. Its field size is intentionally limited; the total capacity is 250 runners, recent editions have sold out, and a waitlist is initiated on a first-come basis once registration closes. Participants receive a medal, a race shirt is provided while supplies last, and aid stations are provisioned for a full winter day in the foothills.
