TPC Harding Park, a municipal golf course in San Francisco, sits beside Lake Merced and is lined with tall Monterey Cypress trees. The PGA Championship presented a major test on this public-access course, which features a Willie Watson design and has also hosted regular PGA TOUR events.
The championship setup made the course tighter and longer: new tee boxes added distance, fairways were narrowed or shifted, and more bunkers were introduced. Shaved bunker edges were intended to draw more balls into the sand, while four-inch rough, narrow driving lanes, and subtle greens emphasized accuracy. The opening hole is a short par 4 with no fairway bunkers but a very tight landing area, and the signature 18th runs along Lake Merced.
