The Gorch-Fock-Lauf is a June road race in Wilhelmshaven, a North Sea port city in Lower Saxony and the German Navy’s largest base. It offers runners a wide choice of distances: student races over 1.5 km, plus 5 km, 10 km, half marathon, and marathon options. All races start and finish at Kulturzentrum Pumpwerk, accommodating school runners, first-timers, club runners, and marathoners on the same race day.
The route runs along the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea and passes over the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke, Wilhelmshaven’s most famous landmark. The shorter 5 km and 10 km courses are flat, suitable for beginners and runners seeking a fast time. The name is often mistaken for a link to the German naval training ship Gorch Fock, but it actually comes from the Gorch-Fock-Haus, a soldier meeting center in Wilhelmshaven where the race started until 2015. The race has a local, volunteer-powered feel, with children and youth events alongside the main distances and a mood described as “a pinch of competitive air and a lot of fun.”
