Belfortrail begins and ends in Giromagny, within France's Territoire de Belfort. Runners venture into the mountains surrounding the Ballon d'Alsace in mid-October. This solo trail event offers three distances: approximately 13 km, 27 km, and 54-56 km. These cover a range from a challenging short mountain run to a full day on rugged terrain. Significant climbing is present at every distance: around 600 meters of ascent for the 13 km route, 1,300 meters for the 27 km route, and 3,100 meters of elevation change for the longest course.
The courses traverse wild trails through forests, mountain landscapes, and areas near lakes and ponds, with all loops concluding back in Giromagny. The long race allows participants 11 hours and features only three aid stations, emphasizing a self-sufficient atmosphere. Belfortrail is a stop on the Trail Tour National circuit, yet it maintains a local rock'n'roll character with the motto "Fort comme un roc'k !". The longest distance attracts a considerable number of participants, with approximately 600 runners in a recent edition, primarily individuals experienced with steep, demanding trail races.
