The Tata Steel Richard Burton 10K begins and ends in Cwmafan, Port Talbot. Each autumn, runners participate in a community road race through the Welsh valleys. The event is open to participants aged 15 and up. It also features the Runtech Kevin Webber Mini Miler, a one-mile family fun run. The 10K course accommodates elite runners competing in Welsh road and veterans championships, while also welcoming local runners, novices, club athletes, and individuals connected to Port Talbot’s steel heritage.
The race incorporates significant local history beyond a typical town 10K. It commemorates Richard Burton, the Welsh actor born in the region, and remembers three young local men who died in 1981. Shaun Tobin has managed the race for over 25 years, ensuring its connection to Port Talbot and preventing it from becoming a nondescript mass event. All proceeds benefit local charities and community groups, with over £250,000 raised for grassroots causes since its inception. Many Tata Steel employees typically participate as runners and volunteers, contributing to the day's blend of workplace, town, and running community spirit.
