The Montane Spine Summer Races begin in Edale, Derbyshire, England, with the next event scheduled for mid-June. This trail running series follows the Pennine Way, offering three ultra-distance choices: 74 km, 174 km, and 431 km. All three races are UTMB Index events. The climbing increases significantly with distance: 2,017 m for the 74 km route, 5,118 m for the 174 km route, and 10,760 m for the full 431 km route.
The short race presents a substantial challenge, utilizing Pennine Way trails instead of a road course or park loop. A listed Sprint edition saw 60 finishers, with the winning male time just under eight hours and the first female completing the course in a little over nine and a half hours. The participants were predominantly British, though runners from the United States, Denmark, and Norway were also listed. This aligns with the Spine's character: a demanding northern English trail race attracting both local ultra runners and international competitors seeking a rigorous Pennine challenge.
