The Rennsteig Staffellauf begins and ends in Schmiedefeld, sending ten-runner teams over approximately 140 kilometers of the Rennsteig in the Thuringian Forest. It is Germany's largest relay race, utilizing the Rennsteig, the well-known long-distance ridge trail crossing this region of central Germany. The event originated in 1999 and requires each team to complete designated stages rather than having every runner cover the entire distance. The course is divided into fixed legs with exchange points, making the day's success dependent on timing, handovers, and maintaining the team's momentum. Runners traverse forested high ground instead of urban streets, with each individual covering one section.
