Boulder Beast

The Boulder Beast sends runners into a well-known boulder field near Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, as part of a demanding annual trail race headquartered at the Castanea Township Fire Company picnic grounds. It takes place in September, begins at 7 a.m., and covers approximately 24 to 25 miles with around 6,000 feet of elevation gain. This is not a simple run: organizers stress that the race requires significant training, and participants must meet strict cutoffs at aid stations located far into the course. The route follows Bald Eagle State Forest trails with names that suggest difficulty: Goat Path, Lightning Ridge, Gut Check, Black Diamond, the Luge, Rote Overlook, Kammerdiner, Chestnut Flats, and the Gorge Trail. Over 500 runners have participated in the Boulder Beast Challenge, and the event often sells out well before race day. The weekend commences with a Friday evening gathering for registration and gear collection, concluding with a PA Trail Dogs-style picnic for those who finish, offering food and beverages back at the race headquarters. Camping facilities and complimentary parking simplify logistics for runners wishing to remain near the start line.
