The Waitomo Triathlon Festival is a short-course triathlon and duathlon day at Lake Rua in Harewood, Christchurch. Racing takes place on calm freshwater, flat bike legs, and run loops near the lake. It is held on a Sunday, with race packs available in Christchurch beforehand and early road closures around the venue before the first starts. The main sprint triathlon follows the standard swim-bike-run format, while the duathlon offers a run-bike-run option for those who prefer not to swim.
The course setup makes the event especially approachable: the water is sheltered, the bike routes are flat, and the shorter formats provide a manageable entry for new racers. The programme includes Kids Mini races for ages 5–9, featuring a short wade-bike-run, along with junior and school events, Try-a-Tri and Try-a-Duathlon races, sprint racing, draft-legal sprint racing, aquabike, and relay-style team entries. Since 2010, it has been a fixture on Canterbury’s multisport calendar, attracting first-timers, families, school competitors, recreational athletes, and experienced racers seeking a short, fast event over a long-distance challenge.
