The Travesia a nado Getaria-Zarautz is an open-water swim on the Basque coast. The classic adult race begins at the port of Getaria and concludes on the beach at Zarautz. The main crossing measures 5,200 meters, a distance requiring swimmers to pace themselves rather than sprint from the outset. The water temperature is not high, and the field starts as one group in a mix of swimmers and sea foam before the participants spread out toward Zarautz.
The day follows a specific pattern before the swim commences: swimmers take a bus from Zarautz to Getaria, join the other competitors, and experience final nerves at the harbor. An adult out-and-back option also exists, starting from Zarautz port to Getaria and returning to the same finish line. Zarautz Balea IKT organizes the event, with assistance from the town council and tourist office. The race has a history spanning decades, and thousands of swimmers have contributed to this tradition over the years.
