The Boston Marathon is a spring road race held on Patriots' Day in Massachusetts. The course runs from Hopkinton to Boston. It is the world's largest annual marathon, attracting approximately 20,000 participants. Entry is known for strict qualifying standards, as well as charity and invitational spots.
The route crosses towns west of Boston before reaching the Newton hills, featuring Heartbreak Hill. It then proceeds past Boston College and into the city, finishing on Boylston Street. Elite athletes, competitive amateurs, charity runners, and large crowds along the roadside participate on the same day, giving the event a more significant civic character than a standard marathon.
