The Foulée des Monts d’Ain 23 km starts from the beach at Port in the Haut-Bugey area of Ain, in eastern France. It is a timed trail race with 994 meters of climbing, so it sits firmly in the hilly, nature-running side of the sport rather than the flat road-race world. The wider event is built around Halloween and includes several trail races and relays, plus children’s races and an roughly 8 km night hike.
The course details are thin, but the numbers say plenty: 23 km with almost 1,000 meters of ascent means regular climbing and a proper mountain-footing effort. The event is aimed at a broad field, from strong runners chasing international ranking points to walkers in costume and families with children. It also lands in a part of Bugey where trail running is expanding fast, joining an already busy Ain trail calendar alongside longer mountain events in the region.
