Brighton's running scene centres on the seafront promenade and the South Downs ridgeline 15km inland, where the Questars Summer Adventure Race uses the chalk hills for serious elevation gain. Cyclists dominate the Sussex roads culture—the Sussex Cyclists' Assoc. 25 Championships and Brighton Excelsior CC Club 10 are staple time trials on the flat, fast coastal plain and gentle rolling terrain just north of the city. The South Downs rise steeply enough to reward climbers; most serious training loops head west towards Devil's Dyke (around 200m) or the Hampshire border.
