Über dieses Rennen
The Big Buffalo route covers 108 miles with approximately 13,000 feet of elevation gain, indicating the Buffalo River Gravel Gran Fondo is a serious undertaking, not a casual ride with a race number. This supported, mixed-surface gravel fondo is based in Amherst, Virginia, with routes extending into Central Virginia and the George Washington National Forest during the peak fall foliage season. Participants can select from three distances: the 108-mile Big Buffalo, the 68-mile Full Monty, and the 32.2-mile Lil' Shorty. The longest route is approximately three-quarters gravel, the middle route is about 65% gravel, and the shortest route reverses this, featuring more pavement than dirt.
The event is held at Camp Trapezium in Amherst. Friday includes check-in with pizza and beer at Loose Shoe Brewery, followed by Saturday's separate briefings and roll-outs according to route. It is presented as a ride rather than a finish-line competition, though participants aiming to compete can pursue Strava KOM/QOM segments for the Buffalo Skull. To be eligible, riders must join the event's Strava club. Big Buffalo participants need to complete four timed segments, while Lil' Shorty has a two-segment prize. The routes are marked, GPS files are advised, rest stops are staffed, and sag support is provided for mechanical issues. Riders also receive a post-ride meal and beer. Camping, complete with water, electricity, and full-service bathrooms, makes it a comprehensive weekend event.
