The Spooky Sprint 5K begins and ends on E. Foster Street next to the Melrose Family YMCA, with participants typically gathering on the Saturday before Halloween. This event is the third race in the YMCA of Metro North’s yearly road race series, linking seven communities via local races. The Halloween timing is significant: participants are encouraged to wear costumes, and awards are given for the best costume and fastest finishers.
The course guides participants down Lebanon Street, through Pine Banks Park, and along Main Street before returning to the YMCA. The field comprises runners, walkers, spectators, families, and many local residents; one year saw over 700 participants. The race generates funds for the Y’s Annual Campaign scholarship fund, supporting access to swim lessons, day camp, and healthy living programs for those unable to afford them. Organizers also embrace the theme: Health and Wellness Director Bernadette Farrell once wore a costume of the Spooky Sprint logo for the race’s anniversary.
