The Swissvale Mile: Race and Family & Dog Walk

The Swissvale Mile is a one-mile morning event for runners, walkers, families, and dogs, held at Dickson Prep STEAM Academy in Pittsburgh. This annual October race offers a timed mile for those seeking a clock and a dog-friendly family walk for a more relaxed pace. Volunteers manage the event, funded by registrations, sponsorships, and donations. The one-mile route emphasizes community over endurance, bringing Swissvale neighbors together. The organizing nonprofit, established in 2014, directs proceeds to local causes such as youth recreation, the Swissvale Community Enrichment Fund, Swissvale K-9 Officers, the Swissvale Juneteenth Celebration, and local baseball and softball programs. The event also partners with Swissvale Rotary, supporting initiatives like the Carnegie Free Library of Swissvale, the Swissvale Senior Center, Community Days, food pantries, school backpacks, girls’ basketball, and Swissvale/Braddock football.
