About
Gravel Around Salzkammergut is a gravel endurance race in St. Georgen im Attergau, Austria, following a full lap of the Salzkammergut lake-and-mountain region. The primary course spans 163 kilometers with 3,000 meters of elevation gain. Riders may extend it with a southern section, reaching 217 kilometers and 3,800 meters of climbing. Approximately 40% of the route consists of gravel, including 3.5 kilometers of singletrack, with most of the remainder on quiet roads. The event limits entry to 300 participants, positioning it as a focused endurance event rather than a large-scale race.
The route connects locations like Almtal and Almsee, Bad Ischl, Ausseerland, Obertraun, Hallstatter See, Mondsee, and the Attersee-Attergau area. Featured climbs and passages include Grunberg and Laudachsee, Gschirrsattel between Almsee and Offensee, Eisenau Alm, Mondseeberg and Hochalm. The extended southern option incorporates Rettenbachtal and Blaa Alm. This event is organized by the Race Around Austria team. Initial interest has drawn participants from Austria and other countries, including notable riders Christoph Strasser and Philipp Kaider, both associated with Race Across America. The organizers emphasize that the finish line is not the conclusion of the day; the race is followed by a gathering, extending beyond mere timing and departure.
