The loop around Vitosha is a mountain super marathon with a cycling option, the kind of event where the route is more important than any finish-line polish. Vitosha 100 traces the mountain in nine distinct stages: Start/Finish, Vladaya, Kladnitsa, Studena, Chuypetlovo, Yarlovo, Plana, Bistritsa, Dragalevtsi, and back to Start/Finish. It has an old-school ultra character: a full circuit, named checkpoints, and a mountain that dictates the conditions.
Anticipate a long, course-oriented day, not a manicured park race. The route traverses villages and mountain terrain, with its folklore already present: "the May sun baked," there is "mud even on the singletrack," Chuypetlovo has caused many to weep, and broken bikes are part of the narrative. Runners, cyclists, and duathlon participants share the event, with overall fields, youth categories, and veteran groups up to 55+, ensuring the start line includes racers aiming for records and individuals testing themselves against the mountain.
