A Turkey Trot is a Thanksgiving running tradition in the United States, typically held on or around the holiday and named after the turkey central to the meal. Most are short road races or fun runs, not demanding distance events: the 5K is the common format, though some races range from a mile to a half marathon.
The participants are diverse, with families, novices, club runners, charity groups, and people in turkey costumes all starting together. Many races collect funds or food for charity, and the tradition is established enough to include Buffalo’s 8K, held since 1896 and frequently noted as the oldest continuously operated public footrace in the United States.
