The SwissCityMarathon - Lucerne begins and ends at the Swiss Transport Museum. The marathon course is structured around a half-marathon loop that travels through the city and lakeside suburbs. This Lucerne race, held annually since 2007, provides three distance options: the full marathon, a half marathon, and a 13 km Schnuppermarathon, or “try-out marathon,” for those seeking a shorter run.
The course proceeds along Haldenstrasse, passing the chapel royal and Lucerne’s historic luxury hotels. It then crosses the pier from Schwanenplatz, offering views of the Chapel Bridge, the water tower, and the Old Town. Participants will run by the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, circle the Horw peninsula, and follow the edge of Lake Lucerne with the Central Switzerland Alps visible. The route returns via the Allmend stadium; the 13 km race concludes in Horw. The inaugural event saw 5,594 finishers, establishing it as Switzerland’s largest debut running event. Swiss marathoner Viktor Röthlin acts as the race ambassador.
