Nearly a thousand children line up for the two-kilometer race at the Altstadtlauf Buxtehude, reflecting the event’s purpose. This is an old-town running day in Buxtehude offering races for children, youth runners, adults, walkers, relay teams, and companies. The program ranges from two kilometers up to the half marathon, with five- and ten-kilometer races included. Encouraging children into sport is a primary aim, and the children’s field can be as significant as the adult results.
The adult five-kilometer race attracts the largest field, while the half marathon includes a relay format and a company relay in addition to the solo race. Local teams are prominent: Fischer-Mohr-Laufteam and BSV feature in several results, and BSV recently beat Fischer-Mohr in the half-marathon relay by a narrow margin. The event can draw over 2,000 entrants in total, with record fields reported throughout the day. One detail lends the race a very local, human character: two boys were once caught using an electric scooter for part of the course, likely not the split time the organizers intended.
