Megamarsch Erfurt is part of the Megamarsch extreme-hiking series, featuring a 50-kilometer route and a 12-hour time limit. Starting and finishing at P+R Urbicher Kreuz, it offers a long point-to-point effort, returning walkers to the same base. While the series includes 100-kilometer versions elsewhere, Erfurt hosts a 50-kilometer event. The format is straightforward: maintain movement for 50 kilometers, utilize checkpoints, and finish within the time limit.
The Erfurt route encircles the city through fields, forests, and country roads, with four aid stations positioned approximately every 10 to 12 kilometers. Participants carry a Wanderpass to collect stamps, establishing a checkpoint-to-checkpoint rhythm. Megamarsch does not maintain official rankings, emphasizing endurance and willpower over competition. Finishers are awarded a medal. The series typically attracts around 1,000 participants per event, ranging from regular hikers to individuals undertaking the challenge for charitable causes.
