Silvesterlauf Kaufungen is a New Year's Eve running event in Kaufungen, near Kassel, organized by LG Kaufungen and held in the early afternoon. It has been running for decades, with over fifty editions completed, and maintains a compact format: an 800 m race for children, a 1.6 km youth race, and a 7.7 km main race. The field is capped at 1,300 runners, and registration is handled online in advance.
The short races go first, followed by the 7.7 km classic round for runners seeking a final effort before the year ends. Young runners receive a certificate and medal, main-race finishers get a medal, and the first three over 7.7 km are honored immediately after the finish. The start and finish area is on Hessenring, race numbers are picked up at Lossetal-Halle, and the local end-of-year atmosphere is evident in the practical details: changing rooms, showers, food at the school, plus sausages and mulled wine near the finish.
