Kalkmineløbet guides participants through the Mønsted and Daugbjerg limestone mines, located near Viborg in central Denmark. This is a trail-style recreational race featuring routes both above and below ground. The primary lap measures 10.54 km. Competitors can opt for this lap individually, a half marathon comprising two laps, a marathon consisting of four laps, the 52.70 km Badman run over five laps, or the Dracula format, which involves continuous running for 10 hours on the same loop. A children’s race of approximately 2.5 km is also available. Chip timing is implemented for the adult races, but not for the children’s event.
The course itself is as significant as the timing: runners traverse two former limestone mine sites, lending the event an experiential quality distinct from a typical road race. Organizers classify it as one of Denmark’s most challenging recreational runs. The terrain prohibits strollers, underscoring the nature of the route. Aid stations are integral to the race’s culture, providing cake, energy drinks, fruit, chips, beer, sandwiches, and bat-wing gummies. Kalkmineløbet has previously been recognized as Denmark’s Experience Race of the Year, a title that accurately reflects a race centered on caves, trails, extended laps, and unique elements absent from conventional city runs.
