Bilbao Triathlon is a half-distance event in Bilbao. The swim takes place in the Bilbao estuary, followed by a bike and run through city streets. The main race consists of a 1,900-meter swim, a 90-km cycle, and a half marathon. This positions it as a challenging middle-distance event between short-course triathlons and full Iron-distance races. It has been held annually since 2011 and is managed by the Basque Triathlon Federation.
An Olympic-distance option was introduced later, offering a shorter race with approximately 1,500 meters of swimming, 45 km of cycling, and 10 km of running. The event attracts triathletes from Spain and abroad. Notable early winners include Mikel Elguezabal and Virginia Berasategui, while Gustavo Rodriguez and Gurutze Frades have won the Half Distance. Following its inaugural edition, Bilbao Triathlon received a Gold Award at the Eventoplus awards for best sporting event of the year, highlighting its rapid impact.
