The start beside the "Hyper-Modern Riverside Museum" and the Victorian Tall Ship Glenlee gives this race a proper sense of departure before the work begins. In its 14th edition, the Glasgow to Edinburgh Ultra is a flat, fast-paced race, but that does not make it soft. It draws ultra runners chasing a strong day out, plus families making a weekend around two big endpoints.
The route follows the River Kelvin, Sustrans Route 754, the Forth and Clyde Canal, the Union Canals, and the Water of Leith, with the Falkirk Wheel and Antonine Wall breaking up the long canal rhythm. Passing the "Northernmost point of the Roman Empire" and finishing through Old Town, New Town, and the Royal Mile, a "UNESCO World Heritage Site," gives the miles some real texture. The medal split is blunt: top finishers earn Gold, Silver, or Bronze by placing, which adds bite to a race that can still "make you smile."
