From Lingholm, this is mountain trail running with its teeth in: lakeshore paths, wooded valleys, Borrowdale, and the long pull onto Scafell Pike. The route takes in what the old notes call “the most beautiful valley in England,” then trades softness for “dramatic rock scenery in the Lake District” as it climbs into high ground.
The marked running only gets you as far as Seathwaite; after that, the section through Styhead, Scafell Pike, Esk Hause and back is unmarked, so navigation is part of the race rather than an optional extra. Expect hilly, mountainous terrain, no distance markers, and a finish back at Crow Park on Lake Road, where the Scafell Pike Trail Marathon feels more like a hard day out with other competent trail runners than a polished road-race production.
