From the WHW sign at the A82/Glen Nevis Road junction, this is an Ultra Endurance Trail Marathons kind of day and night: long, exposed, and plain about what it asks of you. The West Highland Way Challenge Race traverses one of the most picturesque parts of the route, but the point is the “real physical and mental challenge,” not sightseeing with a bib on.
The course runs the whole West Highland Way toward the finish at Milngavie, with food and drink laid on at nine points, two drop bags, and a finish bag waiting there. It draws novices, experienced ultra competitors, marathon runners, LDWA members, and people from hill walking and other long-distance backgrounds; expect pairs and groups grinding into checkpoints together, trying to “dig deep into their resolve and find their inner strength” and earn that “real sense of epic achievement.”
