The Maratona di Pisa is a winter road race held in Pisa, Tuscany. Its main event is the full 42.195 km marathon, accompanied by a half marathon, the Pisanina, on the same program. It takes place on the third Sunday of December, beginning in front of Piazza Daniele Manin, near the race village and a short distance from Piazza del Duomo. The marathon is a FIDAL-sanctioned event, with its course measured to AIMS-World Athletics and FIDAL standards, suitable for runners seeking an official road-marathon mark.
The route is characterized as flat and fast, offering more than just a time trial on open roads. It winds through Pisa, showcasing its blend of art, history, riverfront, and surrounding natural areas. The marathon route extends towards the sea, then returns along the Arno River, concluding beneath the Leaning Tower. The Pisanina follows the marathon course before its turnaround point at 13 km, also finishing at the tower. Additional shorter, Christmas-themed runs are also part of the weekend, including a city run along the Arno and a 4-mile Family Run, broadening the event beyond just the marathon.
