Run for the Whales is a June race series on the west Ligurian coast, featuring a competitive half marathon, a non-competitive 10 km run, and a 3 km Family Run. The finish line is in Sanremo, and the event supports the Tethys Institute's research and protection efforts for whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea.
The half marathon begins in San Lorenzo al Mare, following the coastal cycle path west toward the athletics stadium in Sanremo. The route passes through San Lorenzo al Mare, Costarainera, Cipressa, Santo Stefano al Mare, Riva Ligure, and Taggia. It is a fast, mostly straight course along the sea with minimal elevation gain. The 10 km starts at the Sanremo athletics stadium, proceeds east on the cycle path to the Tre Ponti area, and then returns. The Family Run takes place on the Sanremo seafront. Participants can also contribute to Mediterranean cetacean research via donations, and the event aims to attract visitors to the Riviera of Flowers coastline.
