Ultra Trail Lago Maggiore starts from the Lake Maggiore area in northern Italy, between Piedmont and Lombardy, and runs in September. It is a mountain trail series with four options: a long race of about 60 km, a 38 km race, a 24 km route, and a 13 km short format. The long course climbs hard, with thousands of meters of elevation gain, ridge sections, and a high point on Mont Zeda at 2,156 meters.
The routes use trails, mule tracks, and old military roads through the Val Grande National Park, often described as Europe’s largest wilderness area. Depending on the distance, runners pass places such as Mont Spalavera, Mont Fajè, Pizzo Pernice, Mont Todum, Cossogno, Rovegro, and Cavandone before finishing on the Pallanza lakefront. The courses cross small lakeside and highland villages, with views toward Monte Rosa, the Alpine chain, and several lakes, so the field ranges from experienced mountain runners to people choosing the 13 km or 24 km for a shorter taste of the terrain.
