Aso-san is the focus of this first edition, a lap around the “symbol of fire country Kumamoto” with the five Aso peaks visible: Takadake, Nekodake, Nakadake, Eboshidake, and Kishimadake. It feels less like a casual walk and more like an ultra built around old terrain, volcanic scale, and the Bungo Kaido underfoot.
The route’s character comes from Hogodokaido, once maintained as a feudal travel road and a “military and logistics hub.” The challenge is “Aso’s double pass” at Nino-toge, a significant obstacle rather than a simple climb, with “stone pavement and historical remains” still marking the way. This event is for people who respect long hours, uneven ground, and a finish earned slowly.
