The Yodogawa River Marathon is a relay race held in October along the Yodogawa River in Osaka. Registration takes place at the Yodogawa Riverside Park Nishinakajima Baseball Field, with all teams starting together at 10:00 a.m. Participants can select from 42 km, 21 km, or Family 10 km team divisions. Each race utilizes a 1 km loop course: 42 laps for the full marathon relay, 21 laps for the half-distance relay, and 10 laps for the family race. Time limits are set at 5 hours for the full marathon, 3 hours 30 minutes for the half, and 1 hour 40 minutes for the family event. This format is suitable for groups preferring a consistent lap structure over a point-to-point course.
The race centers on the exchange of a single tasuki, or relay belt, between teammates in a designated waiting area. Full-distance teams can consist of 2 to 25 members, while the 21 km division accommodates 2 to 15 participants, and the Family 10 km division allows 2 to 6. Each runner must complete one 1 km lap individually. The family division requires at least one child of elementary school age or older, with guardians permitted to run with preschoolers. The flat riverside course simplifies race management. Awards are presented to the top three teams in each division. An unsupervised aid station provides water and sports drinks, with participants encouraged to bring their own cups.
