The Takada Castle Road Race begins at Takada Castle Site Park in Joetsu City, Niigata, the former residence of Matsudaira Tadayuki. This early-summer event offers a half marathon (21.0975 km with a three-hour limit), 10 km, 5 km, and 3 km races, alongside a family 3 km category for one adult and one elementary school student. The shorter races maintain a morning schedule, accommodating school-age runners, club members, families, and those aiming for a flat-course personal best.
The course winds through the historic Takada castle town, leading to the Kasugayama Castle ruins associated with Uesugi Kenshin. Participants will run past Takada Castle’s moat, which is covered in lotus flowers during summer, and proceed through streets lined with long covered arcades, traditional merchant homes, Takada Castle’s three-tiered turret, and Takada Sekaikan, Japan’s oldest cinema. The race attracts participants from all over Japan, features seven aid stations and an original T-shirt, and offers visitors a chance to sample Joetsu specialties, particularly Koshihikari rice and local seafood.
